What inhibits Hippo products' effectiveness?

Tell your friends:

We are often asked if there are any problems with using Hippo Remedies alongside herbal remedies, veterinary medicines, dietary supplements or essential oils.

Zinc Blocks
We have noticed that in some cases a remedy is not working to its full potential when the horse has a zinc block in its trough. If you have zinc blocks in your trough, please try using the Hippo remedy, but if you find it is not acting effectively, please contact us so we can help resolve the issue.
Dietary supplements that include zinc are fine and do not cause a problem. Zinc cream applied to the skin is also fine.

Bute, Antibiotics, Anti-fungals
None of these are a problem and you can use Hippo remedies alongside them.
** Steroids, Immune Suppressant medications are the exception and definitely inhibit to some degree the effectiveness of our remedies. The Hippo remedy will still work but it just may take longer to see the effect. This is because our remedies work with the immune system to target disease and steroids work by suppressing the immune system's function.

Please remember that at Hippo Health we support the use of steroids and other medicines and believe that every horse, animal and person deserves the best of both worlds in terms of their health needs. We all have to be pragmatic at times as the health and wellbeing of those in our care is paramount regardless of our ideologies.

Herbal Remedies and Essential Oils - oral or topical treatments
Whether or not they are likely to inhibit a remedy's effectiveness very much depends on which herbs are used. Strong smelling herbs or any in a licorice base will usually interfere with Hippo remedies. Specifically camphor, eucalyptus, menthol and tee tree are a problem. Almost all essential oils will negate the effect of our remedies, unless they are very dilute.
Basically if the formulation smells really strong then they need to be either stopped while on our remedy, or else given at least an hour apart but even with this gap between herbs and Hippo remedies there may still be a risk of interference.
Trough Dosing option:  If it is not possible to stop the herbal tonics while using our remedy, then you may wish to consider dosing the Hippo remedy into their water trough instead of dosing into their mouth or on feed. To do this you would purchase Jerry Can sizes. The standard dose rate into a water trough is one capful (25ml) every 3 days.
